As lovely as some of these trends are, they have run their course. It’s time to move in a totally different direction of many of the home trends we have been seeing for the last decade or two. What’s funny to me is many of these are being replaced with tried and true designs that in my opinion, have never gone out of style.
If you wonder sometimes like I do, “Who decides what is in?”. Mostly these trends are driving by us, the consumers. Designers then report what they are hearing their clients ask for, and then in turn pass along these requests in form of special orders and demand of certain products. New home builders report what types of homes and rooms their clients are wanting and new trends in builders emerge.
Recently, due to many of us being stuck at home more. The demands of our homes changed. Spending more time there, clients realized that their home needs to function in a whole new direction. Many of the new trends I feel came out of this movement of more folks working from home, and entertaining at home.
So what is reported to be on it’s way out according the sources that are informed the most?
All White Kitchens
The days of sterile all white kitchens are slowly fleeting. This trend has been aroun for around 15-20 years and folks are over it. While it is clean looking it lacks imagination. Clients are leaning more towards pops of color and warmer tones and colors. We are spending more time these days in our kitchens and want it to feel more like an inviting space, a cozy spot to entertain.
Wood tones are huge, darker colors and touches of more natural textures. Bringing in touches of brick, stone and mixtures of wood are seeing a popular emergence. Think cabin cozy, rustic and vintage vibe.
Shiplap
Sorry Joanna Gaines! Your popular trend has been beaten to death! We all knew it was coming. Just like the paneling of the decades long gone, shiplap has run it’s course. I’m not saying go tear your house apart, but be prepared when you go to sell it one day soon to receive lot’s of comments about your house being outdated. All good things must come to an end.
Open Concept Floor Plans
This is a trend I never got on board with. I know many people love an open concept floor plan but it’s just not my vibe. I love walls I guess. Maybe because I am a maximalist and need all the hanging space I can get? Really though, I love the coziness of a home with divided spaces. Give me all the nooks and all the crannies!
I think after many folks were stuck at home for long periods of time, they longed for a work space or separate space to hide in and shut the door. I personally love a bungalow style home, cozy and lots of little crannies. Plus, I don’t know about you but, my kitchen is not always clean and there is nothing worse than someone stopping by and seeing your dirty little secret, literally.
Gray Interior Color Scheme
Another trend I just could never get into. I personally don’t know anyone that did. When we were looking at properties to purchase a couple of years ago, it seemed every home was on the gray bandwagon. Gray walls, gray floors, gray carpet. It was exhausting. I joked with our Realtor that it was going to be the blue and mauve of the 80’s. I don’t own anything gray and would have wanted to rip all the improvements out if I would have purchased any of those properties. I steered clients away from this trend, often going with blue if they were insistent on liking the trend. If your home is gray, I hope your not offended. I’m sure it’s lovely and If you love it, keep it and enjoy.
New trends are leaning more towards creams and earth tones. The greens and chocolate browns of the 70’s are on repeat in many new design trends. I think I might still have a few of those towels in storage that my mom would never let us use back in the day.
